Kolom parab (Blessing of the harvest) takes place before sowing time, in November. Paddy straws are placed in the middle of the courtyard and blessed before “Mother Rice” (Baba Enga) ritually “enters the house” (owa bolo) with a pot of water – to bring prosperity. Baba Enga is a positive, powerful spirit and the only one that has retained a positive nature also among the Shiuli converts. Some farming instruments are also blessed at the same time. The village diuri (shaman) sacrifices a white and a black chicken to the bongas. By contrast, the Shiuli household (first four pictures) does not sacrifice any animals and a Hindu pujari performs the ritual.
