Notebook 13

Notebook 13 (Oct 2009 – Jan 2010) captures the continuation of this fieldwork journey: settling into my assistant’s house in Santal Sai and into village life of which Ho ancestors constitute an important part, and learning what to observe and how to participate. The focus is on the specifics of the Ho’s social life: secular and ritual, their seasonal festivals, funerary rituals, kinship networks, marriage negotiations, and everyday exchanges. It was a period of deepening and exploring relationships built since 2006, navigating practical challenges, mapping pedigrees, improving my language skills, and experiencing the daily rhythms of Tarana, Jamda, and surrounding villages. The notebook also captures the practicalities of fieldwork: adjusting expectations, negotiating terms of collaboration, and interacting independently within the community, especially its female section. Notebook 13 is also about the beginning in December of my stay in Boja Sai, a pure Ho hamlet.
